TERFIQ - Thermodynamics and Physical Chemistry Group

Objectives

The objective of this Group is the study. This study is made from the point of view of the thermodynamics and using the thermal analysis techniques of the thermal properties, thermophysics and physical-chemistry of the materials.  In the materials area, the Group is an expert in polymeric materials in general and in thermo stable polymers more specifically.

During these years the Group has studied the calorimetric, thermo mechanical and dielectric properties of the following materials:  the concretes made of polymers, the pure thermo stable resin and as a matrix of composed materials, the mix of polymers, the interpenetrated nets of polymers, the thermo harden paints and the biodegradable polyolefin. The knowledge acquired and the specialization in the instrumental techniques used allows the dealing with a huge selection in both material characterization and transform processes of them. This activity includes:

  1. The study of:  the structural relaxation, the related processes with the thermo durability and stability, the kinetics of the chemical reactions (polymerization, dynamic and isothermal tanned, thermo degradation and thermo oxidative) and the processes of chemical aging.

  2. The establishing of the following properties:

a.      Thermal properties (calorific capacities, thermal dilatation coefficients , enthalpies of phase change, heat reactions   and vitreous transition temperatures)

b.      Mechanical properties (dilatation coefficient, storage and losses and losses factor modules)

c.       Dielectric properties (dielectric allowing and losses factor)

d.      Thermo optical properties

  1. The techniques used  to do all this activity are:

a.       Differential conventional calorimetry, with temperature modulation and stress

b.      Mechanical analysis ( thermo dynamo mechanic analysis, thermo mechanic analysis, creep)

c.       Dielectric  analysis

d.      Thermo gravitimetric  analysis

e.      Thermo microscopic optics

f.        Infrared spectroscopic by thermal control

Nowadays, the Group is working in the thermal tanned through the ultraviolet radiation of polymers and nanostructure shaped resin. On the other hand, the Group studies the optimization of the phototanned and its application and the obtaining of thermo stable materials of low contraction, and otherwise, the synthesis  and characterization of nanocompounds of epoxidics resins with laminar silicates. The Group is a part of the Thermo Energetic Research Group, which has the consideration of a consolidated investigation group by the DGR of the "Generalitat de Catalunya". The academic objectives of the Group are focused in the teaching of thermodynamics and similar disciplines, as are the thermal analysis, the physical chemistry and the study of energetic transformations and storage systems of energy, amongst others.
